Elearning is a process that is comprised of electronically supported teaching and learning. For example, it is a transfer of knowledge and skills which can be enabled by a computer and network. This system has potential users from young children to old people. And regardless of the subject being taught, elearning can help in nearly any fields of endeavor for any age group. To put it in more simple words, elearning is a term that relates to all sorts of training. This can be done through computers using networks, through the Internet, and even via devices like mobile phones, CD ROMs, and digital television.

In a nutshell then, elearning refers to either outside classroom learning or inside classroom learning, using advanced technology. The word advanced is used in this process not only because it pertains to technology, but also to curriculum and the devices used. Computer-based learning, for instance, and web based learning, digital collaboration and virtual classroom opportunities are included in this process.

The media in this learning process can vary as well, including images, text, animation, audio and streaming video and other formats.

The synonyms for Elearning are internet based learning (IBT), computer based learning (CBT), or web based learning (WBT). And in today’s hectic pace of life, this type of system of learning is considered to be one of the most effective and efficient self paced personal training. This system is more flexible in terms of timing, as it is available 24 / 7 and is entirely different from traditional ways of learning where an instructor will be there in person to teach. Thus this process makes the task of both instructor and student easier, as elearning has become more comfortable for the learner and offers the choosing of convenient times and methods for learning from home.

Elearning programs are used by many people for various purposes that include specialized training in high tech industries and occupations like pharmaceutical fields, telecommunications, hardware and software development.
